State mental health system will be costly to repair

Georgia faces years of federal oversight, as well as expensive remedies, after an eviscerating investigation of the state psychiatric hospital in Atlanta.

State officials declined to say Thursday whether they plan to contest findings by the U.S. Department of Justice that a lack of “generally accepted professional standards” contributed to patients’ deaths at Georgia Regional Hospital/Atlanta.

Looking for a cure

DR. WADE SELLERS, the Northwest Georgia Health District’s director, noted in discussing the funding/services emergency at the Floyd County Health Department that a legislative study last year found “Georgia’s public-health system is in a state of crisis, burdened by inadequate funding and a shrinking pool of nurses amid rising demands for services. …. If a pandemic or other major emergency occurs, the medical system in Georgia will collapse unless improvements are made to public health.”

What did the General Assembly do to address this with a permanent fix after being so alerted? The same as it did with the equal crisis regarding emergency trauma care: Nothing. The same as it did with revelation of unexplained deaths and sexual abuse at the state’s mental hospitals: Nothing. Stop-gap funding and putting in an “ombudsman” are not solutions. They are stalling tactics.

A crew of 21 local medical volunteers Tuesday flew to China’s quake-stricken Sichuan province on board a charter flight.

This is the second medical team ever dispatched to Sichuan by the Macao Special Administrative Region Government (SAR).

The flight, along with tons of medical supplies, will arrive at Chengdu’s airport Tuesday afternoon, and the team of 11 doctors and 10 nurses will later be transferred to Nanchong, a city severely damaged in the disaster in the province, said Lee Chin Yuen, director of the SAR’s Health Bureau, at the Macao International Airport.

Nurses With Adverse Work Schedules Have Poor Sleep, Which Can Affect Their Work Performance

Sleep quality and quantity among nurses is negatively influenced by adverse work schedules and additional home demands. These results have implications for both worker and patient safety, as sleep adequacy affects job performance, according to a research abstract that will be presented on June 9 at SLEEP 2008, the 22nd Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies (APSS).

The study, authored by Jeanne Geiger-Brown, PhD, of the University of Maryland, focused on 2,273 registered nurses. Work schedule variables, including hours per day and per week, days per week, weekends/month, shift typically worked, quick returns (less than 10 hours off between shifts), mandatory overtime, on-call, and circadian mismatch were analyzed. Sleep was measured by two items: “My sleep was restless” and “I got less sleep than I thought I should”, with responses divided to three or more nights per week as the indicator. Respondents were also asked about home demands, including time spent on child care, dependent elderly care, and domestic chores.

Athens Regional is Hiring!

Athens Regional

As one of the area’s largest and fastest growing health care institutions, Athens Regional Medical Center does not measure its success by the flourishing size of the hospital complex or the accumulations of state-of-the-art technology. Rather, people are the measure of Athens Regional’s success. People, such as a pediatric nurse reassuring a frightened child before surgery ... people, such as the chaplain comforting the family who has just learned of their loved one’s illness ... people, such as the social worker making aftercare arrangements for the elderly patient. The jobs and faces of these 2,000 employees vary. Yet their spirit and dedication to meet the daily demands the health care profession requires are extraordinary.

Athens Regional consistently provides award-winning healthcare services to the community by hiring qualified and dedicated individuals.

Mich. doctors, nurses, students back health care ballot proposal

A campaign to put a ballot proposal before voters in November that would make affordable and comprehensive health care coverage a constitutional right in Michigan picked up the endorsement of several health care groups Monday.

Organizations representing primary care and family physicians, a statewide nurses union and medical students are backing the Healthcare for Michigan campaign because they say the state’s health care system is in crisis. Uninsured patients are going without care and overwhelming emergency rooms, the groups said at a series of news conferences across lower Michigan.
